Oahu, Hawaii is a beautiful island FULL of incredible things to see and do. My best friend and I explored far and wide to find the best hikes, beaches, and hidden gems, away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. Don't get me wrong, a stroll down Kalakaua Avenue will make you feel like a million dollars, and you're bound to shop 'til you drop, but if you're after a more authentic Hawaiian holiday, then read on for our suggestions.
Koko Head
I mention this one first because you simply cannot miss out on hiking the INSANE Koko Head trail. Warning though, this hike is not for the faint hearted. Personally, this would be one of the most difficult tracks I've climbed, but the view from the top was absolutely worth it. The Koko Head trail is made from an old rail line that seems to literally sky rocket up the mountain. At times you'll be climbing the rails like a ladder, but once you get to the top, you'll enjoy a well deserved break with a clear view of almost the entire island.
2. Manoa Falls
I'm a sucker for a waterfall, and it wouldn't be a trip to Hawaii without visiting one. Manoa Falls was a moderate, scenic hike, and definitely high on my recommendations list.
3. Sunset Beach, North Shore
After spending a day at Waikiki Beach, we were ready for a more serene beach experience, so we ventured up to the North Shore, and we certainly found it! Sunset Beach extends for miles and is the perfect spot to relax and unwind. Now, I'm not a surfer, but the beaches of the North Shore certainly made me want to start.
4. The markets in North Shore
Along our drive to the North Shore we came across the cutest little food markets on the side of the road, and well, anything to do with food and you have me reeled in. We stopped and indulged in grilled corn and açai bowls (practically our entire diet in Hawaii) to fuel up for the beach.
5. Diamond Head
Diamond Head is the more popular hike on the island, and a bit more friendly on the fitness level than Koko Head, but still provides a beautiful view of the ocean that you will fall in love with. Perhaps try this one first to build up to Koko Head.
6. Rent a car and explore
The best part of our trip was when we rented a Jeep for three days and simply explored! It would be quite difficult to visit all the amazing beaches, markets and hikes of Oahu without a car, so I would recommend factoring this into your holiday budget and getting straight into the adventures.
There are so many other activities that you can also get up to in Oahu - a one week stay and we were running out of time. Next time I visit Hawaii I will be sure to visit the other islands, so feel free to share your tips with me! Enjoy your trip to Oahu!
